Chinese Green Tea Recipe

Nǐ hǎo! Dear readers, here’s a very healthy and refreshing Chinese green tea recipe—yes, the one served at fancy Chinese restaurants. It’s that kind of tea that makes me feel healthy just by smelling it. But before I tell you the full recipe, let me tell you how I happened to experiment with it.

How To Make Chinese Tea At Homee

Recently, a friend brought a very expensive jar of tea as a gift from China. It looked so intriguing that I wanted to make it, but I wouldn’t dare start brewing without knowing how to actually do it. So, I tried finding some recipes online, and after a few trials, I was able to do justice to the flavors, just as my friend described.

But let me tell you, it is not your simple, boring brew. It is a complete mashup of fresh, earthy flavors with a little sweetness. It also has a natural bitterness that balances every other flavor. Moreover, it is so light that it hits me like a refresh bomb, making it the perfect drink for my morning recharge.

Once you try it, I bet you will be compelled to quit your regular caffeinated brew and become addicted. This traditional tea is served in a gondola cup, which is special because it sits in it without getting oversteeped. It has been a comfort for me since I made it for the first time.

Even beyond the taste and depth, I love the ritual of making it and how it forces you to make time to take a sip. I know coffee does the same thing for most of us, but for me, Chinese green tea always does.

Equipment Required

  • Saucepan: I use a saucepan to boil water and steep the tea.
  • Tea Strainer: If you are using loose tea leaves, I recommend straining the tea using a tea strainer.
  • Teacup: I always have my Chinese green tea in small, handle-on teacups, as is traditional in Chinese culture. However, you can use any teacup you want.

Expert Tips That I Recommend

  • While steeping, I make sure to lower the water temperature as green tea is delicate and may turn bitter if the water is too hot.
  • I prefer using loose tea leaves because they provide fresher and better flavor.
  • To keep my tea from cooling down quickly, I warm the cup before pouring the tea in it.
  • I also make sure to use only filtered water to make the tea. Compared to tap water, it brings out the best flavor and taste of the tea.
  • Sometimes, after cooling the green tea, I add a small amount of honey or lemon juice to add sweetness.

Storing And Reheating This Recipe

Storing

  • Refrigerator: Before storing it in the refrigerator, I first allow the tea to cool to room temperature. Then, I put it in a clean, airtight container to prevent it from absorbing any odours. Finally, I place it in the refrigerator, where it can be stored for up to 3-4 days.

After this, the tea starts to taste stale and loses its flavour. You can also store it in a tin glass jar with a tight seal. I advise against storing it in plastic bags or containers because they don’t seal properly and can allow air and moisture to spoil the tea.

Reheating

  • Stovetop: First and foremost, I use the stovetop method for reheating my green tea. I transfer the tea to a small saucepan, warm it gently over low heat, stirring occasionally to ensure even heating, and turn off the flame when the temperature reaches just below 175°F. I serve immediately.
  • Microwave: Microwave tea is the easiest method of reheating. You just have to pour the tea into a microwave-safe cup and microwave it on medium power for at least 30-45 seconds, stirring and checking for temperature in between. Keep repeating the process until it reaches the desired temperature. I advise not to microwave it for too long because it can alter the taste of the tea.

What To Serve With This Recipe

I like to serve my Chinese green tea with a number of sides that perfectly complement its freshness. First up, I serve it with a light Sandwich to balance the freshness with the subtle flavour of the tea. Then I like to have it with Asian cuisines like Sushi, Spring Rolls, or Dim Sums. The gentle flavor of the tea enriches the flavors of these authentic dishes without overpowering them.

Other interesting pairings are Cookies and Scones, which add mild sweetness to the meal. This tea also tastes amazing with Rice Cakes and Veggie Stir Fries, complementing its clean and fresh taste.
