History Of Sonic Drive-In

Sonic Drive-In (also known as Sonic) is an American drive-in fast-food restaurant chain founded by Troy S

mith Sr. on June 18, 1953. The first Sonic Drive-In store was opened in Shawnee, Oklahoma, the U.S. In 1953, Troy with his business partner opened a steak restaurant.

In the starting weeks, the restaurant was making around $700 per week with the sales of root beer, hamburgers, and hot dogs. After seeing these profits, Troy Smith Sr. continued to work alone.

In Louisiana, Troy saw a Drive-In where people were ordering through speakers, while carhops were used to delivering food to the cars.

After seeing this, Smith borrowed some cars from his friend to establish a drive-in system. Sales almost tripled due to this strategy.

Due to this success, Smith partnered with Charles Woodrow Pappe (an entrepreneur) and opened the first franchised store of Sonic Drive-In, leading to a never-ending success.

However, on September 25, 2018, Inspire Brands acquired this Oklahoma-based fast-food restaurant chain. Inspire Brands is the same brand that operates Arby’s and Buffalo Wild Wings.

With its unique concept, Sonic Drive-In has become one of the popular fast-food chains with more than 3500 locations in 43 states of America.

In 2020, Sonic introduced a more efficient drive-in system with wider drive-thru lanes and a wider layout for car docks.

Due to this more efficient system, the brand has also increased its sales in 2020 by over 21% generating an overall revenue of $5.7 billion.

This is a significant rise when we compare it to the brand’s revenue of 2019; this is $1 billion.

What People Say About Sonic Drive-In And My Honest Review

Keith Eats Everything At Sonic
Video by The Try Guys

While Sonic may seem like an excellent restaurant, people tend to have mixed reviews regarding the fast-food drive-in giant. If you look at any website like TripAdvisor or Yelp, you will not prefer to visit Sonic Drive-In because people haven’t had a wonderful experience there.

I never have visited Sonic before. So before visiting, I thought to check some online reviews to some opinions of other people, like what people love to eat there and what they don’t recommend there. But after looking at the reviews, I got confused and the only question I had in my mind was- Should I visit Sonic or not?

The reason behind this was most of the reviews were negative. Many people were complaining about their food and I read some complaints regarding their service as well. Many people have to wait for minutes for their orders and many people have also stated that they haven’t got any response from their staff while ordering food. It seems like Sonic’s staff is uninterested in getting new orders.

While many people also complained about the food that they received. Flavorless burgers, large and cold fries, over-priced coffee, non-melting ice-cream, degraded the quality of hot dogs has been degraded and even reviews that’ll completely change your mind if you are planning to visit Sonic Drive-In.

But when I visited Sonic Drive-In, my overall experience was pretty fine. I ordered a classic SuperSonic double cheeseburger, a 6″ cheesy bacon pretzel dog, their famous tater tots and a hand-mixed Sonic shake. It took me around 7 to 8 minutes to get my order, but everything was so delicious that I decided to visit Sonic again. I admit that the service was a little slow but to be honest, it was worth the wait.

So my opinion on Sonic Drive-In is that is a good drive-in restaurant, depending on the location you are visiting. Many customers who visited Sonic have bad experiences regarding food and their service, but my overall experience was fine. One of the best things about the brand is that it has tables outside, so if you are on a bike ordering from Sonic, they got you covered. So if you are planning to visit Sonic, I recommend you to go there and try some of their food.
