FDA’s 2025 New Orange Juice Rule Could Cut Sugar, Costs, and Imports!
The bright and sweet orange juice has ruled for over years, but a change may shift the taste to modernize the sugar standards of the pasteurized juice and boost U.S. local farmers.
The New Orange Juice
In August 2025 FDA and USDA proposed to lower the sugar content in pasteurized orange juice. It is said to have decreased from 10.5% to 10%
Lower Sugar Content
FDA wants to modernise orange juice to ensure producers are keeping the products honest and recognisable by making a Brix change of 0.5% reduction in sugar.
Why the FDA Is Changing The Identity Of Orange Juice
FDA Commissioner, Dr Marty Makary, said that the juice will taste great and represent the farmers rather than the bureaucrats.
USDA Secretary appreciated the step and said, “Diseases and outdated bureaucracy have struck our citrus growers. This proposal will surely help cut out the red tape and ensure more American-grown oranges go in the American glasses.
No, the taste will not be different as the reduction of sugar content is so minimal that the flavors will remain identical.
Will Orange Juice Taste Different Now?
Dr. Tom Brenna, a professor of nutrition, said, “Orange juice contains natural sugar.” This step will ensure that consumers are reducing their sugar intake without sacrificing flavour.
