For this recipe, all you truly need is a little bit of time on your hands and Thanksgiving leftovers; that’s honestly all! Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where we all tend to overestimate ourselves in terms of how much food we can actually consume.

Usually, halfway through the turkey, everyone seems to be full! So, it is one of those holidays where naturally, you will be left with a decent amount of leftovers. It can be a task to figure out what to do with so many leftovers but trust me; this sandwich is truly one of the best and simplest options ever!

What Equipment Will You Need To Make Turkey Cranberry Sandwiches?

  • Spoon – Starting with the simplest yet most important equipment of them all, you will need a spoon to spread the cranberry sauce or mayo onto the sliced bread to make your sandwich.
  • Bowl – You will need a large bowl to mix your cranberry mayo together.
  • Butter Knife – A butter knife will be a handy tool to spread your butter on the bread slices before you toast them. You can also use a paring knife in case you don’t have a butter knife.
  • Cutting Board – Once your sandwich is ready, you will need a cutting board to slice it from the center, just for a neater presentation. Also, in case your turkey isn’t carved already, you can use the cutting board for that purpose as well.
  • Large Knife – A large knife will be needed to slice your sandwich and also to carve your turkey, in case it hasn’t been carved into thin slices already.
  • Skillet – A large skillet, preferably a cast iron one, will work well to get that perfect char with the butter on your bread slices while you toast your sandwich.

What Ingredients Will You Need To Make Turkey Cranberry Sandwiches?

  • Turkey – Turkey, of course, is the most vital ingredient in this recipe. To make about four sandwiches, you will need a pound of carved roasted turkey, preferably leftover from Thanksgiving. In case you don’t have any of that and still want to enjoy this sandwich, you can use turkey slices from a deli.
  • Cranberry Mayo – It may sound like cranberry mayo is a task, but it truly is not! You can follow a really simple recipe for cranberry mayo, as the mayo mixed with the tart cranberry sauce gives it a perfect balance of creamy and tart flavor. For this recipe, ½ cup of the same will be enough.
  • Whole Wheat Bread – The best option of bread that I would recommend using is whole wheat bread. But, in case you prefer something else, you can go ahead and do so. In any case, you will need eight slices of bread to make four sandwiches.
  • Lettuce – Just to add some texture to your sandwiches, you can use four leaves of romaine lettuce. You can also use butterhead lettuce if you would like, but I would strongly suggest not using iceberg lettuce because of the extra water content and milder flavor. You can also skip adding lettuce to your sandwich if that is what you prefer.
  • Cheddar Cheese – To add to the flavor and also some cheesy goodness, sharp cheddar cheese slices will work perfectly well for this recipe. To make four sandwiches, you will need eight slices of sharp cheddar cheese.
  • Butter – Lastly, you will need two tablespoons of salted butter to toast your bread and give it the perfect flavor and char.

Steps To Make Turkey Cranberry Sandwich

1. Sandwich! Assemble

This sandwich is genuinely so easy to make that the first step itself is to assemble it! For that, spread some cranberry mayo on four slices of bread and lay them out. Top each slice with a leaf of romaine lettuce.

Once done, add the turkey slices and then the sharp cheddar cheese. Place a slice of bread on top, slathered with some butter. But make sure that the buttered side is outside and not inside. That’s all!

2. Toast The Sandwiches

The next step is simply to toast the sandwiches. For that, heat your skillet on medium heat for about 2 minutes. Make sure you don’t heat it on a high flame or for too long, as that will result in the butter reaching its smoking point as soon as you place it in the pan.

That will eventually make your kitchen extremely smoky and add too much char onto your sandwiches, which is not really needed. Toast the sandwiches for 2-3 minutes on each side until they have a crispy exterior. Once done, take them off the skillet, place them on a chopping board, slice diagonally and serve!

What Can Be Served Along With The Turkey Cranberry Sandwiches?

  • Stuffing – Stuffing makes a really great option to serve alongside these sandwiches, considering how well the flavors of the cranberry and turkey go with it.
  • Pumpkin Tortilla Chips – If you want a slightly lighter side to serve along with your sandwich, then pumpkin tortilla chips make a great option. You can make them yourself by sprinkling pumpkin spice over tortilla chips, or you will also be able to find them in your local supermarket.
  • Side Salad – Again, if you are looking for a lighter side to serve with your sandwich, a simple side salad with a french vinaigrette is also a pretty good option.
  • Poutine – Although poutine is enjoyed by Canadians all year round, I do believe that it makes a wonderful Thanksgiving treat. There are french fries topped with gravy and cheese curds! The perfect Thanksgiving combination, and there’s truly nothing you can’t like here!
