Let us take a look at how exactly this pie can be made!

Purple Sweet Potato Pie

Here, there is a huge misconception amongst a lot of people that I would like to address before we begin exploring this recipe. Purple sweet potatoes and ube are not the same! Ube is, in fact, a purple sweet yam! They both carry a sweet flavor which works really well in most desserts.

However, what makes ube stand out is the fact that it also has notes of pistachio flavor. Moreover, ube is hard to get by outside of the Philippines, whereas purple sweet potatoes are easily available almost everywhere! So, don’t worry; you won’t have to take a trip down to the Philippines to create this marvel of a dessert!

Coming back to the recipe, this recipe is actually much simpler to make than you would have thought. Yes, baking may seem like a huge task and intimidating too. But there are certain subtle ways in which you can tweak this recipe and make it even easier.

Starting off with the pie crust, in case you don’t have enough time or simply just cannot be bothered to make one from scratch, you can easily use a store-bought one. However, you will find a complete guide on how to make this pie, starting from the crust to the filling, and also some decoration ideas! I have also included a list of equipment that you will need to make it easier. So now, let us dive right into this recipe!

Other Thanksgiving Recipes That You Can Try

What Equipment Will You Need To Make Purple Sweet Potato Pie?

  • Measuring Cups – As precision is vital when it comes to baking, you will need a set of measuring cups to get the exact measurements of the ingredients for this recipe.
  • Measuring Spoons – To measure ingredients that will be needed in a much smaller quantity, you will need a set of measuring spoons.
  • Bowl – You will need two large bowls for this recipe, one to make the pie crust and the other one to make the filling of the pie.
  • Food Processor – This piece of equipment is actually optional. The reason behind this is just that if you would rather find it easier to make your pie crust in a food processor, you can do so. I prefer using my hands as it helps give a better idea of the consistency of the dough and will help you from over kneading the dough.
  • Measuring Scale – Some of the ingredients, like the purple sweet potatoes, will be measured in pounds and ounces, so you will need a measuring scale for the same.
  • Plastic Wrap – You will need a plastic wrap to wrap the dough while it needs to chill before rolling and baking.
  • Rolling Pin – You will need a large rolling pin to roll out the dough evenly.
  • Paring Knife – A paring knife will be a handy tool to cut off all the excess dough once the pie pan is lined.
  • Pie Pan – For this recipe, to get a proper measure and a perfectly lined pie, you will need a 9” round pie pan, which is also sufficiently deep.
  • Large Knife – A large knife will be needed to chop the cold butter into small pieces before rubbing it into the flour.
  • Fork – You will need a fork to mash the purple sweet potato once it is baked and cool.
  • Whisk – You will need a whisk to bring together the purple sweet potato pie filling.
  • Baking Tray – A baking tray will be needed to bake the sweet potato initially, to soften it, and also to finally bake the pie.
  • Cooling Rack – Finally, to cool the pie evenly before serving it, you will need a cooling rack.

What Ingredients Will You Need To Make Purple Sweet Potato Pie?

For The Crust :

  • All-Purpose Flour – All-purpose flour works best when it comes to making pie crusts. Don’t use bread flour as it has a very high gluten content, which will make the pie have a bread-like texture. All in all, you will need 1 ¼ cups of the same, plus some for dusting.
  • Unsalted Butter – Butter will give the pie its rich flavor and also help with shortening, as we will be making a simple shortcrust base. You will need 8 tablespoons of unsalted butter for the same.
  • Salt – Salt will help enhance the flavor of the pie crust, so you will need ½ teaspoon of the same for this recipe.
  • Baking Powder – It may seem odd to add baking powder to a shortcrust, but hear me out! Adding just ⅛ teaspoon of baking powder to this recipe will help the dough expand while baking and not shrink.
  • Cold Water – Finally, to bring it all together into a dough-like structure, you will need 3-4 tablespoons of ice-cold water.

For The Filling :

  • Purple Sweet Potato – Purple sweet potatoes will form the base of the filling, and hence, you will need 1 ¼ pound of the same.
  • Evaporated Milk – Evaporated milk will help add texture and also with thickening the filling, so you will need 12 ounces of the same for this recipe.
  • Brown Sugar – Brown sugar will give the filling a malty flavor, which really works extremely well when combined with sweet potatoes. Try using light brown sugar, as it packs less moisture. You will need ⅔ cups of the same.
  • Eggs – Eggs will again help bring the mixture together and will also form a structure while the pie is baking, so you will need three large eggs.
  • Butter – You will need three tablespoons of melted, unsalted butter for this recipe to give the filling a rich flavor.
  • Vanilla Extract – Vanilla extract will help enhance the flavor of the filling and also take away the egg flavor. You will need one teaspoon of the same.
  • Nutmeg, Allspice, Salt – The salt is again to enhance all the flavors, and the rest of the spices end up giving the filling a warm flavor, perfect for Thanksgiving! You will need ½ teaspoon of all three ingredients.

Steps To Make Purple Sweet Potato Pie

1. Heat The Oven And Bake The Purple Sweet Potato

The first step in this recipe is to heat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Meanwhile, split the potato in half and place it on the baking tray. Once the oven is sufficiently hot, add the tray to the oven and let the potato bake until it is soft on the inside, which should take about 1 hour.

2. Make The Pie Crust

While the potato is baking, you can start making your pie crust. For that, add the flour, baking powder, and salt to a large bowl. To that, add the cold butter pieces and start rubbing them into the flour mix with the tips of your fingers.

Do this as gently as possible, as overheating from your hands can melt the butter. The butter should be rubbed in a way that it forms small sand-like grains with the flour. Once the flour resembles a sand-like texture, you can add in the cold water.

This step can also be done in a food processor if you would like; just make sure you don’t over-mix the dough. Once the cold water is added, knead it lightly a few times, just until all the ingredients are together and it forms a dough. Once the dough is formed, wrap it in plastic and refrigerate for 1 hour.

3. Make The Filling

Once the purple sweet potato is soft enough, you can take it out of the oven and let it cool for a little while. As soon as it has cooled down, you can prepare the filling. For that, discard the skins of the sweet potatoes and transfer them to a large bowl.

Mash the sweet potatoes thoroughly, making sure that there are no lumps. This process can also be done in a food processor to get a smooth puree. Once the sweet potatoes are mashed, add in the evaporated milk, brown sugar, eggs, melted butter, vanilla extract, nutmeg, salt, and allspice.

Either blend it further in a food processor till it forms a smooth puree or mix everything vigorously until the filling is smooth. Just like that, your filling is ready!

4. Line The Pie And Bake

The last and final step, once the dough has chilled for a sufficient time, is to bake the pie. But first, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Then, transfer the dough onto a heavily floured surface and pat it down. Then, start rolling the dough until it reaches a diameter of 12 inches.

The thickness of the dough at this point should be somewhere around ½ inch. While rolling the dough, make sure you lift it from time to time and dust just enough flour so that it doesn’t stick to the surface or the rolling pin.

Once the dough is rolled out, carefully transfer it into the pie pan. Press it gently into the pan, making sure that the pan is properly covered. If the dough tears, don’t worry! We can use scraps to fix it right up.

Then, once the pan is lined properly, start cutting off the excess from the edges and if there are any tears, fix them with the excess dough. Then, start folding in the sides of the dough to crimp them.

Once the pie crust is completely ready, add in the filling and place the pie pan on a baking tray. Add the pie to the oven preheated at 350 degrees Fahrenheit and let it bake for 50-55 minutes.

Once the pie is out of the oven, the filling might still be a little wobbly, but that is completely fine. It will settle down as the pie cools down. For that, place the pie on a cooling rack and let it cool completely, then serve with your favorite sides!

What Can Be Served With Purple Sweet Potato Pie?

  • Whipped Cream – The simplest option of them all is to serve the pie with some whipped cream. Whipped cream makes a really easy and delicious topping to the pie.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream – As purple sweet potatoes have flavors of vanilla in them; vanilla ice cream also makes a good option to serve as a side with the pie.
  • Meringue Cookies – Meringue cookies will add a soft and chewy crunch to the pie, which will complement the texture quite well.
  • Coconut Cream – Purple sweet potato and coconut make a marvelous flavor combination; hence, coconut cream can make a good accompaniment to the pie.
  • Pecan Streusel – Lastly and surprisingly too, pecans work quite well with purple sweet potatoes. So, you can serve pecan streusel or even praline with the same.

What Will The Purple Sweet Potato Pie Look And Taste Like?

With baking, one good part is that you know what you can expect in the end. Well, that does make it easier to anticipate what you are supposed to finally get once done with baking. As far as the purple sweet potato pie goes, it literally looks like a colorful delight!

The pie has a bright purple color, which makes it look really beautiful. In fact, maybe even too beautiful to eat! Talking about the flavors, the first bite that you will take will have a crunch from the short-crust pastry, along with being flaky.

The filling has a sweet flavor, of course, with hints of vanilla from the purple sweet potato. This flavor, combined with spices like allspice and nutmeg, creates a wonderful contrast and also a warm and fuzzy dessert, perfect for fall and Thanksgiving.
