Expert Tips That I Recommend

  • Since Red Beans are the star of this dish, I use fresh, best-quality red beans for a better texture. If you’re using dried beans, soak them overnight to get perfectly cooked beans.
  • You can also include smoked sausages or ham hocks for a rich, smoky flavor.
  • I simmer the beans on low heat for a longer time. The longer they are cooked, the better their taste and texture.
  • For a creamier texture, I mash some beans alongside the saucepan.
  • Always use long-grain, perfectly cooked rice as they go well with the red beans.
  • I garnish the gravy with fresh herbs like cilantro, parsley, and basil for the freshness that elevates the flavor of the whole dish.

Storing And Reheating This Recipe

Storing

  • Refrigerator: I store the leftovers of this dish in an airtight container. Usually, I prefer storing the rice in a separate container from the red beans to avoid mushy rice. This way they can both last for up to a week in the fridge.
  • Freezer: I prefer freezing the rice to make it last up to 6 months. I store the rice and beans in separate freezer bags or airtight containers and label them before freezing.

Reheating

  • Microwave: I reheat rice and red beans separately in the microwave safe dishes. I add a splash of water to both to make them moist and reheat them for 2 to 3 minutes until heated through.
  • Stovetop: Usually, I transfer the red beans and rice in the pot by adding a splash of water and cook it over low heat constantly stirring in between until it is heated through.
