There’s no better way to enjoy fun times together with family than having a BBQ. Grilling together and sharing the meals, especially in the outdoors helps family members to catch up and bond. Now that it’s grilling time, you will need to spruce up your grilling skills. If you are new to grilling, you need not worry because, with the right preparation, anyone can pull off a successful BBQ.

With BBQ, preparation is everything. Here’s what to prepare when planning a weekend BBQ with the family.

1. Get The Right Fuel

When it comes to preparing that killer BBQ weekend, getting the right fuel is crucial. The fuel argument is mostly convenience vs flavour. Some grilling enthusiasts will only use a certain type of fuel insisting that it helps to preserve the right flavour. Others will say that fuel is fuel, what matters is preparing and grilling your food appropriately.

That being said, the most common BBQ fuel types are charcoal, gas, and wood. Most times, none is superior to the other. It all boils down to personal preference. Charcoal grill enthusiasts prefer them mainly because they are inexpensive and one can readily find upscale models in most places. Charcoal grills are also liked because they preserve meat flavour.

After being preheated for at least 20 minutes, charcoal grills can get very hot, ideal for searing choice meat under high heat. On the other hand, gas grills are convenient and easy to clean. They are pricier than charcoal grills and need more care because they have more parts that can break. If you want to have a smoky flavour on your barbecue, there is an option for this on most gas grills. When using wood, most people prefer wood fire pellets because they give off less acrid smoke and burn evenly to allow the meat to cook uniformly.

2. Prepare Your Food

A great way to enjoy BBQ better is to prepare all your ingredients in advance. Avoid the last-minute rush that might ruin your perfect plan. Create your salads and chop all your vegetables and fruits a few hours before grilling. Ensure that you defrost your meats in the refrigerator to avoid any bacteria buildup.

A marinade is essential for meats to bring out a rich flavour. Marinating your chicken wings, drumsticks, T-bone steak or sirloin helps to make them tender and juicier. You can also sample some BBQ recipes that can add that spark to an ordinary grilling weekend. Smoking meat adds a more prosperous and fuller flavour. To get the best smoke meat, some BBQ smoker cooking tips suggest that you soak some pieces of wood in water for a while then place them on the hot charcoal and cover the grill. If you are using a gas grill, most come with a smoker box.

When grilling, always use tongs or a spatula instead of a fork to flip your meats. This way, you will avoid losing juices when turning. If you love the aroma of herbs on your grilled food, toss the herbs directly on the charcoal.

3. Prepare Your Food Shopping List

Beyond having a nice grill that attracts the neighbours, or good grilling skills, ask yourself what you will cook. Remember that all ingredients need to be ready before you even light your grill. You don’t want to run around looking for some items or having to rush to the grocery store to pick important salad veggies. Having a comprehensive BBQ shopping list will save you the agony and disappointment of embarrassment in front of your family. Here are some essential items you could consider:

  • Onions
  • Burgers
  • Mixed sauces
  • Whole corn
  • Potatoes for baking
  • Veggies such as tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant and lettuce
  • Bananas
  • Hot dogs and sausages
  • Beef, pork, lamb
  • All drinks

4. Prepare Grilling Tools

Grilling Meat

While the grill is the centrepiece of barbecue, investing in the right set of tools is essential. The choice of tools is mostly dependent on the type of meat on the grill, but in general, adequate grilling tools can last years before you think of replacing them. At least invest in aluminium foil, meat thermometer, cooking spray, metal spatula, apron, towel, heat-resistant gloves, and a grill brush. Also, ensure you have the right utensils, table cloth, napkins, and toothpicks to set the table.

5. Safety Is Important

Grills cause a lot of domestic fires. Even though you might be having it in the outdoors, investing in fire safety is paramount. Always have a fire extinguisher nearby. In the case of other accidents, you can place a first-aid kit nearby.

Now that you have invited family over for a barbecue, you can use the above tips to help you prepare adequately. After doing so, you’ll have a far better experience preparing, cooking, and enjoying various barbecue meals with your loved ones.
