McDonald’s has many popular food items loved by people, but some items on the menu don’t last forever. Many still wish for a few items to come back and a few to never return. Let’s find out all the McDonald’s discontinued menu items you should know.
The menu of McDonald’s has changed a lot since the start. Some items were removed because it was too expensive or the taste was not so likable to the customers. Whatever the reason behind the discontinuation, some items came and went without any noise.
There are some classic items that, in my opinion, are the staples of McDonald’s, like Chicken McNuggets, the Big Mac, classic french fries, McChicken, Egg McMuffin and many more.
We’ve covered the recipes of all the above foods on our blog, so do check them out as well.
There are chances that you might not have heard about some McDonald’s menu items that existed in the past. No, they were not part of the secret menu, but poor sales or weird taste made them disappear forever within a short period.
Let’s list out all the food items of McDonald’s which were part of the menu but discontinued and dig into the actual reason behind the discontinuation.
1. Arch Deluxe
Arch Deluxe was introduced as a gourmet version of regular old hamburgers in 1996. It was a very sophisticated menu item but was discontinued in 2000. The Arch deluxe had a quarter pounder of beef placed on a potato flour sesame bun.
It was topped with peppered bacon, lettuce, tomato, American cheese, onions, ketchup, and a secret sauce which was a mixture of Dijon mustard and mayonnaise, which implied providing a better experience.
Arch deluxe was fulfilling, yet it was taken down from the menu.
Why was Arch Deluxe discontinued?
The reason behind the flop was that customers preferred the classic one over the deluxe one as it was more affordable. Due to this, McDonald’s did not get any reasonable return on investment, and it was tagged as an expensive flop.
2. Fish McBites
Fish McBites was similar to Chicken McBites ( chicken being replaced with fish). The idea was to have filet-o-fish in smaller bites, but it did not go as per plan. Fish McBites were small pieces of Alaskan pollock filets, the same which is used in Filet-O-Fish.
The pieces were submerged into a golden batter, fried until golden brown, and served with Tartar dipping sauce.
Why was Fish McBites discontinued?
They were introduced in 2013, and after three months, McDonald’s had to cancel this item from their menu because of low sales. However, some online petitions were signed to bring back the Fish McBites. There is no official news of the comeback. McDonald’s may hear the voices of Fish McBites Lovers.
3. Hula Burger
The Hula burger was the meatless version specially created for Catholics who did not eat meat on Fridays. The meat patty was replaced with a pineapple patty. The best thing about the hookah burger was that it had the same bun as the Filet-O-Fish.
The bun had a filling of a pineapple piece and not one but two American cheeses.
Nowadays, many people are curious about the taste of hula burgers. A YouTuber recently went to the nearest outlet and ordered a filet-o-fish without the fish and the sauce. Later at home, he added smoked pineapple and reviewed the hula burger.
I mean, that was quite an intelligent idea to have something which is not on the menu.
Why was Hula Burger discontinued?
Introduced in 1960, the hula burger had to go back very soon as it did not match the taste buds of Catholics. A meatless burger was a good idea but replacing meat with pineapple was a big no.
I am glad that no petitions are signed to bring this back because pineapple instead of meat is not so tempting.
4. Onion Nuggets
Onion nuggets were chicken nuggets for vegetarians. McDonald’s introduced this so our vegetarian friends could munch on this fried side dish. These were bite sized onions which were layered with batter and then fried.
Onion nuggets were chunks of onions which were deep fried similar to chicken nuggets. Onion nuggets are different from onion rings as in nuggets minced onions are used whereas in onion rings, a ring shaped of onion is fried.
Why were onion nuggets discontinued?
The onion nuggets were loved by vegetarians. However, it was canceled as McDonald’s focused more on chicken-based items for future profits.
Onion nuggets were similar to onion rings except for the center hole. Maybe the shape was not so appealing, and we had to say goodbye to our veg version of chicken nuggets.
5. McSpaghetti
McDonald’s introduced McSpaghetti so that their customers could enjoy spaghetti easily. It was introduced in the late 1970s in the dinner menu. The aim was to include Italian dishes as well on the menu.
McSpaghetti was made from pasta and mixed with marinara sauce. Meatballs were also added to the dish, and a good amount of cheese was sprinkled on top.
Why was McSpaghetti discontinued?
Almost everyone loves spaghetti, but still, McSpaghetti could only stay for a short time, mainly because spaghetti with marinara sauce in a box was too complicated. In 1980, McDonald’s discontinued McSpaghetti in the USA except in Orlando.
You can also try McSpaghetti if you are in the Philippines.
6. McPizza
Like McSpaghetti, McPizza was also introduced to have some Italian items on the menu. The taste of McPizza was really great.
McDonald’s provided many toppings options like pepperoni, crumbled sausage, Canadian bacon, grilled chicken, bacon bits, onions, diced green peppers, tomatoes, black olives, pineapple, Jalapeno pepper, mushroom, and spinach.
They also had three different kinds of sauces – pizza sauce, Alfredo sauce, and
Olive & garlic sauce. Also, they had mozzarella cheese as well as cheddar cheese. One could choose the toppings as per their choices and enjoy the McPizza.
Why was McPizza discontinued?
McDonald’s was known for its fast service, and making the McPizza was challenging the fast service tag. It took around 11-14 mins for McPizza to prepare. So, McDonald’s had to remove it from the menu.

Why was The Angus Burger discontinued?
The collection of burgers was a thing in McDonald’s but did not last very long. It was introduced in 2009, but the high price of the item was one of the main reasons for its failure.

Introduced in 1984, McDLT was marketed as “Keep hot side hot and cool side cool.” The idea behind McDLT was to keep the burger away from getting soggy. The packaging was designed in such a way that hot and cool ingredients were not mixed until one was eating.
McDLT had sliced onions, lettuce, two slices of tomatoes, and American cheese. It also had mayonnaise, mustard, pickles, and ketchup. An amazing fact about McDLT is that it stands for McDonald’s lettuce and tomato.
So the main heroes of this burger are obviously lettuce and tomato.
Why was McDLT discontinued?
McDLT was discontinued because the packaging material used was not eco-friendly, and later on, McDlt was succeeded by the McLean Deluxe in 1991, which was lower in fat when compared.
9. Hot Mustard Sauce
McDonald’s hot mustard sauce was one of the legendary dipping sauces that were delicious and flavorful. The sauce was prepared with corn syrup, vinegar, mustard powder, soy sauce, sea salt, and cayenne pepper.
