In these trying times of the COVID 19 pandemic, there is less need to move around and do regular shopping for groceries.

That said it’s important to take measures to make grocery last longer. Luckily there are a few simple tips that you can utilize.

  1. Keep Bread in the Freezer

By storing bread in a cool and dry place, it can last a couple of weeks at most. However, in the freezer, bread can last up to 3 months.

Therefore, simply stock on bread and throw them in the freezer. You will only be taking what you need. This is an excellent way to ensure that you don’t have to make multiple trips to the store.

  1.  Better Storage of Wheat Flour

We often store wheat flour in the pantry. The problem with this is that it doesn’t last very long. The oils can cause it to spoil quickly and go rancid. This obviously makes it unfit for consumption.

A good way to make your wheat flour last even longer thereby reducing waste and not having to purchase more is to store it in the fridge. This can make it last up to 6 months.

Note- however that if you notice that the wheat flour is producing a bitter or unpleasant smell, then this is a sure sign that it has spoilt.

  1. Keep the Mushrooms in a Cool Dry Place

Many of us don’t realize that we actually reduce the longevity of mushrooms by keeping them in a plastic container. This is because the containers can trap moisture which will cause the mushrooms to spoil faster.

The best thing to do after buying your mushrooms from the grocery store is to remove them from the plastic containers and store them in a cool dry place.

Keeping mushrooms in the freezer is also an effective way of ensuring that they last much longer.

  1. Stock More on the Fruits and Veggies

As long as they are kept in a cool and dry place, fruits and veggies can last a long time. You can, therefore, consider stocking these in larger amounts and to ensure that they are kept dry before being put inside the fridge.

Considering that you will use up onions, carrots tomatoes almost on a daily basis when preparing your meals, it makes sense to stock more of these.

  1. Keep Strawberries Dry Before Storage

Many of us tend to wash all the strawberries and store them in the freezer while wet. This, however, can promote the growth of mold which can, in turn, cause us to fall sick.

A more effective method to keep your strawberries dry for a much longer time is to ensure that they are dry before storing them in the fridge.

Also, line the interior of the storage container with a paper towel to keep the strawberries dry.
