College life is a busy and to-do lists rule it. There are lessons to attend, assignments to be done, extracurricular activities, friends, and study. Many students write in their notebooks all the to-do items except their mealtime. They skip breakfast, lunch and take snacks for supper.
Healthy eating is important to college students because they need a lot of energy for study and body growth. Every student should ensure they have set aside time for all three main meals in the day. There should also be snack time in between. The following are tips on how to eat healthy as a student.
1) Always Balance Your Meals
To eat balanced meals does not mean you go for the most expensive meals. There are nutrition and diet apps you can install on your phone to help you track your diet. They are simple to install, just like the way you install study organizing apps on your phone.
You can eat simple yet balance food. All you need to do is ensure all your meals have the main three components of a balanced meal – carbs, proteins, and vitamins. For carbs, include grains in your meal. Add to grains lots of vegetables and then dairy products for proteins.
Also, avoid foods that can cause weight gain. These are foods like creams, soft drinks, processed meat, cakes, biscuits, and bread.
2) Consume More Water
According to science, the human body is 60 percent water. Nutritionists advise people to drink at least eight glasses of water daily. Water helps in the digestion of food and its transportation. The internal body temperature is regulated by water.
Your internal body cleans itself using water and to help in the excretion process. You need to keep your body supplied with water all the time, even after mealtime.
3) Have Snack Breaks
Some students would prefer to eat once a day, especially in the evening. When you stick to one meal daily, you tend to eat more because, in your mind, you know you will have another 24 hours to the next meal. Eating heavy meals contributes significantly to weight gain.
You should always take light, balanced meals at least three times a day. During breaks, you may have a packet of healthy snacks in your bag. Snacking in between meals helps to keep your appetite in check.
4) Avoid Fast Foods
Fast foods are everywhere, starting from college to the town streets and home. Although they provide a quick solution to meals, they are the unhealthiest foods consumed by people. Most fast foods like fries are affordable and can be consumed anywhere.
If you must consume fast foods, go for healthier choices like veggie burgers, non-cream pizza, grilled chicken and salads.
5) Use Supplements
Many genuine supplement companies do extensive research before they manufacture them. You should first do some research to establish if the manufacturer is genuine or not. Supplements provide a quicker way to help boost your brain functionality and the immunity.
Most students consume them to boost their micro-nutrients. Health experts advise students to supplement magnesium, calcium, and vitamin D. Calcium is important for strong bones, especially if you are below thirty years old.
6) Eat From The College Dining Hall
Dining halls provide a variety of healthy and unhealthy food at subsidized costs. If you choose to eat healthy foods from the dining hall, you will save more money than when you go to a hotel, restaurant, or fast food center near the college. Keeping yourself healthy while also saving some decent money is not a bad idea after all.
Students’ schedules are always busy, and they find themselves rushing between lecture halls, study rooms, field activities, and assignments. The schedules might be more compact for working students. Many students redeem their lost meal time with fast food or snacks, which leaves many with unhealthy bodies. Every student should set aside ample meal time every day.
