What Happens To Your Body When You Overeat?

overeating food

There is a story about a king, Adolf Fedrick, who ate himself to death because of overconsumption of food. He gorged himself on extra dishes and died due to digestive failure despite having a big appetite.

Now, I know that you won’t eat like the king, but hey, please have a check on your consumption of food. However, there are specific side effects of overeating. Let us see some things that can happen to your body when you overeat.

1. Unwanted Illness

Overeating can cause several issues in your daily life. It can invite unwanted illnesses and diseases. If overeating is not treated on time, then it may lead to certain types of cancer, heart disease, and even stroke. Overheating can also lead to obesity and hinder your weight loss journey.

2. Makes You Lethargic

Eating more food does not mean that you get more energy. You can end up feeling more tired and lethargic. If you eat more than required, your body will need extra energy to digest that food. All of your energy will be used for digestion, and in the end, you will feel lousy and tired.

3. Increase In Weight

The extra food may expand your stomach because of the extra calories. The extra calories will not only make an uncomfortable setting in your stomach but will convert into fats. The fats will be the reason for your weight gain, and trust me, this kind of weight gain is unwanted and unhealthy. Your body weight will increase, and your clothes won’t fit you anymore.

4. Heat Burn

Another effect of overeating is heartburn. The food that we consume is broken down into hydrochloric acid. Still, if you eat more than the capacity, the hydrochloric acid will turn into the esophagus, which causes heartburn.

5. Diabetes

Overeating may lead to diabetes as one may consume sugary and fatty foods in excessive amounts. It can also shoot your blood sugar levels. In the long run, you can also have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes.

6. Other Health Issues

You might be surprised to know that overeating can also negatively affect the mental health of an older adult as compared to those who do not overeat. If you regularly fill, then you can have bloating and excessive gas issues. One might also feel nauseous because after overeating, digestion is complex, and it can result in unwanted feelings.

What Causes Overeating?

A lot of food that cause overeating

There can be various reasons for someone overeating, and sometimes these reasons are unknown. However, you don’t have to worry. If you can identify the reason behind your overeating issue, you can easily overcome the problem. Let us see some of the most common causes of overeating.

1. Emotional overeating

Some people eat a lot when going through some emotional roller coaster. I have been there too many times. I find myself eating while I am upset or crying over things. Sometimes, eating food while you are emotionally not well can act as a coping mechanism.

Remember the time in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. when one of Phoebe’s boyfriends reminded Monica that it was just food and not love? Some people find comfort in food and don’t realize they are overeating.

2. Love For Some Food Items

Certain food items are irresistible, and when served in front of us, we find it difficult to control the temptation. If you serve chicken wings before me, I will lose count and eat more than hunger. This shows that some favorite food items are difficult to resist, and we overeat.

3. Highly Processed Foods

Most foods we get in our nearby local stores are highly processed. The flavors are enhanced, and you don’t realize when you are full. This leads you to the point where you eat more than you require. Many food items satisfy your tastebuds but can only help you to be fulfilled for a short time, and you end up eating repeatedly.

4. Social Gatherings

Social gatherings can be fun, and food adds more fun and happiness to the event. That is why when we attend any social meeting or event, we end up overeating. Now, if you are someone who has to participate in social events regularly, then you need to keep a check on your consumption.

5. Medical Conditions

Some medical conditions also result in overeating. Camilla Cabello, who is a very famous singer, had such a case where she could not have control over her appetite and overeating, which led to weight gain. She called that issue zombie eating, and many people face such issues due to some medical issues. However, they are curable, and one can get on track with proper supervision and treatment.

How Can You Train Yourself To Eat Less?

Overeating can cause serious issues, but through some practical steps and strategies, one can easily overcome the problem. Today, I will be sharing all the possible ways you can stop overeating. By following these simple techniques and strategies, I am sure you will have great control over your cravings and live a healthier life.

1. Make A Healthy Meal Plan For Yourself

Maintaining a balanced diet can be difficult, especially if you are too busy with work. Now, you can still have a balanced meal.

Research a diet plan service that matches your health goals and delivers nutritious, pre-portioned meals to your doorstep. This way, you not only save a lot of time but make sure that you stay on the right track.

2. Remove Any Distractions While Eating

Avoid distraction dont use snaks while watching TV

When we get our meals or snacks served, we start exploring Netflix or something to watch while we eat. This may look like an effortless and non-toxic habit, but it isn’t. Make sure that while you eat, there is no type of distraction.

Do not watch or do something that needs your attention. Give yourself a hassle-free meal time. Have your meal in peace and enjoy every single moment.

3. Understand Which Food Trigger You

When I see or smell noodles, I get tempted and can’t stop eating them.

There is a particular food that triggers you, and you cannot control the temptation. If you can identify these trigger foods, keeping a distance and avoiding overeating would be easy.

Most of the time, these trigger foods have some specific flavor and notes. Try to understand and incorporate the same tastes in your regular meals.

4. Balanced Meal Is Important

balanced meal in the plate

The primary reason for someone’s overeating issue is not having a balanced meal. A balanced diet includes vegetables, whole grains, fruits, and other food items.

When one doesn’t have proper meals with all the required nutrients, they do not feel fulfilled and lack energy. Having a balanced diet will make sure that you don’t overeat.

5. Don’t Ban Everything

If you think that to avoid overeating, you need to avoid everything you love, then you are mistaken. You don’t have to ban every food, but instead, have a meal plan so that you keep track and avoid overeating something that you love.

As we know, moderation is essential in life, and so is the food case. Having your favorite food or cuisine is okay if you eat in moderation. So you don’t have to eliminate your favorite food but reduce and consume in the right amount.

6. Try Volumetrics

If you have been overeating since a good time, you might have gained unwanted weight. Now, you not only have to stop filling but lose the extra pounds.

Try volumetrics for the same. A volumetric diet is a meal plan designed in such a way that it focuses on low-calorie, high-fiber, and non-starchy food items.

If you consume such food items before a meal, then you can stay full for a longer time and stay active. Examples of such foods are fresh fruits, whole grains, beans, fresh vegetables, lean meat, and many more.

7. Avoid Eating From Containers

Do you find yourself constantly eating from the container directly? Please stop and get yourself proper plates and bowls for the meal.

Eating directly from the container can be harmful. Firstly, you need to realize how much you are consuming and end up eating more than required.

Secondly, even if we are complete, we often continue eating as the container still has some food left. This can be one of the reasons for overeating. So ensure you serve your food on regular plates and enjoy the flavors.

8. Don’t Take Much Stress

One of the reasons why people indulge themselves in overeating is stress. Most people cope with their anxiety and depression with food.

For those people, food is their escape, so whenever there is a slight inconvenience, they will eat something or other. Many people do not realize that they are overeating when in stress.

Their minds are very well distracted and unconsciously consume more than required.

9. Fiber Is Your Friend

Fibre rich food

If you want to stop overeating, stay complete for a good time. For this, fiber can be your best bud.

Consuming fiber will keep you away from unwanted cravings. Try incorporating more fiber-rich foods like vegetables, oats, fruits, and beans are some of the great options.

Also, fiber will keep your digestive system great, so it is a great choice.

10. Be Regular With Your Meals/Avoid Skipping Meals

In this hectic schedule, assigning a specific meal time is very difficult. However, ensure you are regular with your meals and try to eat at regular intervals.

If you are skipping meals, then there are chances that you end up eating more than the hunger in the next sitting.

Be sure to eat your meals even if trying to lose weight. People follow a diet that calls for intermediate fasting, but remember that it is not for everyone. Understand your body and then try these diets and strategies for weight loss.

11. Keep A Food Journal

food journal

This is difficult for some people, but keeping a food journal is practical and helpful. You can easily track your meal and even have a clear picture of what you are consuming.

This will help you to understand your body requirements very clearly. Also, you will be more mindful of what you are eating. Note down what you are eating with calorie count, and you can continue adding more details later on.

12. Eat With Like-Minded Friends

The type of company we keep is actually how we become later on. Therefore, you must ensure the people you hang out with have the same goals and purpose.

Otherwise, it will be tough to avoid overeating if your friends are always around food and stuff. So it is advised to continuously watch with like-minded friends who support your healthy diet journey.

13. Protein Is Crucial

protein loaded food

It would be best to take protein regularly so that your body can feel fulfilled, and that is when you gorge yourself on unhealthy snacks and food items. Protein will give you energy and keep you full throughout the day.

You can easily incorporate protein in your diet through protein-rich fruits and vegetables or take supplements as well if you feel that your meal does not have the required protein content.

14. Stabilize Your Blood Sugar Levels

Did you know that many restaurants serve something sweet as a complimentary before you place an order? You might think that it is their one of the customer services, but I’m afraid I anymore have to disagree. If you eat something sweet before dinner, your blood sugar levels will increase, and you will eat more.

Now, I cannot say that all restaurants do this with the same move, but I recommend checking your blood sugar levels and avoiding hiking before a meal to avoid overeating.

15. Slow down

Hey, please take time and eat. Take your time, especially when you are eating. Take a good time to have your meal. Generally, we get the signal after 20 minutes of having food, and that is if you eat in a hurry, you end up eating more because you did not give the time to stomach in sending the signal.

Take 20 – 30 minutes to eat your meal. The more time you take to eat will ensure that you get the alert on time when you are full. Chew slowly and nicely. Also, if you take time to chew your food, then the digestion will also be great, and obviously, you will feel fulfilled for a great time.

16. Watch Your Alcohol Intake

Drinking alcohol can also make you eat more than required. The intake of alcohol lowers your inhibitions and stimulates your appetite.

If you have alcohol in small amounts, it won’t be a problem, but if the consumption of alcohol is more, then you will feel more hungry. Therefore, limit your alcohol intake to avoid overconsumption, especially before meals.

17. Plan ahead

What is the harm in planning your meals? Moreover, when preparing meals, always make sure that you are being mindful. You can make a proper diet and ensure your meal is perfectly balanced. This will ensure that you don’t end up feeling unfulfilled and look for other food items, which leads you to the stage where you overeat.

18. Replace sugary beverages with water

water in the glass

Occasionally, we get the urge to drink and opt for sugary beverages. Now, if you think that it is perfectly fine to sip sweet drinks, but they do add lots of calories and carbs. Instead, replace your sugary drinks with water.

We all know that water is excellent and keeps you hydrated. Little do we know that drinking water also helps you to stop overeating. So switch to better options like water, and you will be amazed by the results.

19. Check In With Yourself

When was the last time you checked on yourself? It gets tough to take care of yourself when you are pacing back and forth between work and family. I want you to be at least kind to yourself.

Listen to what your body and mind want instead of escaping the problems. And we all know that food has been the most fantastic escape. You should eat to fulfill your hunger, not to cope with problems. As they say, don’t eat your feelings.

20. No Fad Diet Mentality

fad diet

If you want to lose weight very severely and for that, you are following any fad diet, then please reconsider. These diets may help you to lose weight fast, but they are for sure a short-term thing. One should always follow diets that are beneficial in the long run. You might lose weight, but it is a short-term technique.

21. Break old habits

Most of the time, we try to start a better lifestyle, like eating healthy and in appropriate amounts. However, it is tough to break the old habits. We quickly get distracted and fall back to the old unhealthy habits.

To avoid overeating, you need to break any habit that becomes a reason for the same. Whether getting distracted or not planning your meal, break such practices, and then you can easily avoid overeating.

22. Eat Healthy Fats

healthy fat food

If someone is willing to lose weight, the first thing they do is cut down the carbs and fats. However, if you think fats are bad, you are partially wrong. There are healthy fats, too, which are essential for our body. You can get these healthy fats from avocados, olive oil, nut butter, and other food items.

These healthy fats are not only healthy but also help you avoid overeating. If you consume high-fat and low-carb food items, you will feel less hungry and can control the unwanted carvings, too.

23. Keep your goals in mind

If you want to achieve anything in your life, you need to make a goal and keep an eye on it. Similarly, to avoid overeating and stay fit, keep your goals in mind. Strategize according to your destination and execute the plan.

As Taylor Swift Said, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail .”So, having a goal set in your mind will keep you straight, and you will reach the stage where you are not at all stuck on overeating.

24. Get Help If Needed

You might feel that overeating is not a big issue and you can overcome it just like that, but then, after a few days, you end up eating more than usual and feel like you are stuck. If you find this relatable, then don’t worry.

You need a little help. A little push from your loved ones and gentle reminders will work for you. If you still find it a little tricky, then you can also seek some professional help.

25. Practice Mindful Eating

Practicing mindful eating goes a long way. , please be aware of what you are eating and drinking. This way, you don’t have a significant or strategic plan. Be mindful, and you are almost in control. Take care of your needs, and you will not want to overeat to feel contented.

26. Get Familiar With Recommended Portion Sizes

It is not actually what you are eating but how much you are eating. Your portion size matters. You can have an ice cream without guilt if you take only a few scoops.

As I said, it is actually about the portion size. So, if you get those little cravings, grab a bite instead of filling your belly. You get the desires satisfied and don’t overeat like this.

27. Stay Hydrated

Keep drinking water whenever you get the urge to eat something, but not hungry. So let the freshwater go down your system and help you to stay energized. You can easily avoid overeating and gaining extra pounds.

28. Pay Attention To Hunger Cues

A lot of snaks filled in the bowls

If you know the time of the day when you feel the most hungry, plan your meal around that time. This is a great way to avoid such scenarios when you eat snacks now and then and still feel unfulfilled.

29. Do You Need The Second Serving

Sometimes, we fill our plate and still go for the second serving. Stop and think twice. Do you need that second serving? I don’t think so, and that is why you should rethink that second serving. You are complete, and there is no need to have the second serving. Just remember this next time while you eat.

30. Don’t Watch T.V

Just a few moments before, we talked about avoiding distraction while eating, and now I will specify the one issue we all don’t even know exists.

Watching T.V. while eating may take your mind off the meal, and this way, you end up eating extra, which could be better. Keep all the distractions away during your meals.

31. Give yourself some grace

Even if you try to keep your urge under control, you may fall off the rails, which is fine. Give yourself some grace. Don’t let guilt take over you. If you cannot control one time, then start again. Don’t slip down further. Get back on track and make better choices once again.

32. Include Satiating Foods

Satiating Food in the bowl

Generally, we tend to overeat when we do not get the feeling of fulfillment. If you want to stop filling, make sure that you include satiating foods in your diet. These foods will keep you full for a long time and improve satiety and appetite control.

The best options to add to your diet are whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. You can add more protein-rich foods like lean meat, poultry, and dairy products. The idea is to consume those food items that are healthy and will keep you fuller for a long time.

33. Don’t Stay Up Till Late

Sleep also plays a vital role in your eating habits. If you stay up late and do not get enough sleep, you can feel more hungry and overeat. Scientifically speaking, not getting enough sleep or staying up till late results in increased levels of the hunger hormone ghrelin and reduced levels of the satiety hormone leptin.

This is a hormonal imbalance, and it can result in you craving more carbs and calorie foods. So, next time, ensure you are not sleep-deprived to avoid overeating. Also, get a good sleep, and the next day will be a great one.

34. Beware Of Sugar And Salt

salt and sugar

Sugar and salt are essential items that are found in every household. Food is complete by adding both of them. However, I suggest you stay away from these Two S’s. Sugar and salt elevate the flavors of any dish. The enhanced flavors can result in overeating.

Also, if consuming store-bought products that claim to be healthy is okay to eat, check their labels. They are generally high in sugar and sodium. Consumption of sugar and salt can leave you wanting more. So avoid any processed food from the store, and with time, your tastebuds will adjust, and you will no longer crave sugary or salty items.

35. Change your response to comfort food cravings

Comfort foods make us feel better whenever we are going through some difficult times, but then, after a while, we find drooling even over the thought of a food item.

Change your response to comfort food cravings. Suppose you let your mind believe that this particular food item is going to make you feel better. In that case, you will end up eating extra.

36. No Serving Bowls On The Table When Eating

serving bowls

Ensure that everything you want is on your plate while eating. Don’t keep the serving bowls; you will reach out when your container is empty and eat more than required. This is a great way to stop yourself from eating more than needed.

37. Get A Food Scale Or Measuring Cups

Sometimes, we need to get accurate food measurements and eat extra. It is best to use a food scale or measuring cup. This way, you can weigh the quantity of food and avoid overeating. You can quickly get food scales or measuring cups in the store, which are easy to use.

38. A small portion of restaurants

If you are dining out at a restaurant and worried that you may end up ordering extra food and overeating? Start with small portions. You don’t have to call ten pieces of chime wings or a full plate of fried rice. Order small amounts of food as per your appetite, and if you feel you want more, the server must be around only.

39. Eat only when you are hungry

Now, it may sound bizarre when I ask you to eat only when you are hungry because we only eat when we are hungry. However, most of the time, we don’t know that it is hunger or boredom that is making us crave something.

Now, you may be surprised that we feel hungry only sometimes but still eat a lot of food items. So avoid doing that. Only eat food when you are genuinely hungry. You may not notice this, but if you are mindful about what you are eating and when you are eating it, then you can make a big difference.

40. If Satisfied, Then Stop

Take a hint and stop eating if you feel satisfied. I know it can be hard to realize that you are full, but as soon as you get the alert, stop then and there. Don’t take another bite and leave the leftovers on the plate. You can save it for later, but you should be done eating right now.

41. Fill half of your plate with healthy vegetables

Vegetables in half of the plate

Just a few points before we discussed consuming satiating food to avoid overeating. That is why filling your plate with healthy vegetables is very important. This way, you will add lots of nutrients and not feel hungry for a good time. Vegetables help in proper digestion, too, and also control your appetite.

42. Refrain from using food as a reward

This is for all those foodies who live only to eat. We are called foodies for a reason, but a foodie does not always need to overeat, right?

Most of us reward ourselves with food. Following a diet for a week, then why don’t we eat more on the weekend is the passing thought. Do not do this. Refrain yourself from using food as a reward.

43. Distract Yourself

If you have had a great meal and still want to eat something more, then it is not that you are hungry, but maybe the food is your comfort, or you want to do something.

Now, if you feel stuck in this situation, then distracting yourself is a great idea. You can focus on something else, like doing work or going out. This way, you can avoid the cravings and not overeat.

44. Plan for slip-ups

Even if you fail and gorge yourself on heavy meals, that is okay. You need to know that you are imperfect and cannot be so vital to always be on track. So always remember that there can be times when you will have slip-ups, but then it doesn’t mean you will let the slip-ups happen again. Get up and go back to the healthy choices.

45. Plan your holiday feast earlier

Holidays can be chaotic, and you may overeat after seeing all the sweet and savory treats and meals. Now holidays are the real test for you. If you let yourself drown in the festive season and eat too much, you will regret it later. So, if you know something like this may happen to you, plan.

Prepare yourself for the holiday celebrations. For this, consider consuming less carbs and fat before the festival. During the celebration, try eating small portions. This way, you can enjoy more items without overfilling your belly.

46. Don’t Survive On Just Salads

Salad Loaded in plate

If you think eating salads will keep you fit, then you are right, but eating just salads is stupid. Salads are great but won’t fulfill the other nutrient requirements, making you feel unfulfilled. Ensure you include whole grains, fruits, meat, fish, poultry, and dairy products.

47. Don’t Hit The Gym Too Hard

Exercising and gyming are vital. You need to move your body to keep yourself healthy and stay energized. However, if you hit the gym too hard, you will use too much energy.

Now, when the body is energy deprived, it will ask you to eat food to regain the loss. This will mean you eat a lot of food and then need clarification about why you are not losing weight or getting bulky muscles. Make sure that you do your best in the gym.

48. Pack The Leftovers

pack your food

If you are dining out and have leftovers, ask for a go-to meal box. Pack the pieces, and you can consume the food later on.

This way, you avoid any wastage of food and also do not overeat to finish the food. Request the people at the restaurant or cafe to pack your leftovers, and they will gladly do so.

49. Snack healthy

Snacking has become a habit of almost everyone. If you think that snacking can be unhealthy, then you are wrong. Switch the unhealthy snacks with the healthy ones. Let me clear things up: healthy snacks are also delicious.

Try them out, and you will find great snacks you like. This way, you can snack without feeling guilty. I usually prefer seeds and nuts while snacking. This way, I make sure that my body absorbs all the healthy nutrients, and I also satisfy my cravings.

50. Eat before you go out

If you were planning to visit somewhere and worried that you would eat extra because of all the flavors and aroma, then eat before you go. If you are complete, you are least likely to get the cravings when you are out. This way, you avoid overeating and eat healthy at home.

51. Use a small plate

Use small plates for eating

If you tend to overeat if you have lots of food on your plate, then use small plates. This way, you won’t put extra on your plate and feel fulfilled after eating.

This is one of the most remarkable ways to trick your mind into thinking that you have eaten enough when your brain constantly feels that you need more.

52. Eat up before you drink

We tend to have some drinks or beverages, especially when having food with guests or friends. It is better to eat up before you drink. Alcohol should never be consumed before your meals. Alcohol will increase your cravings, and you will end up overeating food.

53. Pack your meal

The Meal is on table ready for packing

If you feel you need more time and need more time to eat before you go out, pack your meals. Firstly, you can avoid eating anything outside which is unhealthy, and secondly, you won’t be swayed away by the flavorful food and overeat. Packing your meal will ensure you eat healthy and in accurate amounts.
