Thanksgiving is one of those holidays where you enjoy turkey and stuffing, of course with some gravy too. But sometimes, don’t you think making fresh gravy gets limited only to Turkey Day? With this easy homemade gravy mix recipe, you can whip up a quick gravy for yourself in a very short amount of time!

Homemade Gravy Mix

Once you make this really easy homemade gravy mix, you won’t find the need to move back to those instant gravy packets ever! I mean, who wants to have something that is packed with preservatives when you can enjoy something similar that is homemade instead? Right!

This gravy can be a perfect companion to make meatloaves, chicken, mashed potatoes, and even sandwiches, for that matter, more delicious. A gravy mix basically needs only three ingredients or elements, which are flavorings, a thickener, and some seasoning.

You can also include fat in the recipe (which I have over here); however, using fat is optional. Moreover, as the gravy mix recipe eventually depends on you and your personal preference, the seasonings and flavorings can also be altered as per your taste.

So, in this article, right before we get to the method of how this gravy mix is made, I have first discussed the equipment that you will need to make it, followed by the ingredients, and finally, the method and the nutritional information. So, let us dig right into this recipe of homemade gravy mix!

What Equipment Will You Need To Make Homemade Gravy Mix?

  • Bowl – You will need a large bowl to mix all the ingredients together to make your homemade gravy mix. You will also need a few small bowls just to weigh out some of the ingredients.
  • Measuring Cups – This isn’t baking, I know! So, the measurements don’t have to be exactly precise. However, measuring cups can be of great help to get that perfect blend of flavors.
  • Measuring Spoons – Again, to get a more accurate measurement of the seasonings and flavorings, using some measuring spoons will be handy.
  • Whisk – You will need a whisk just to mix all the dry ingredients together.

What Ingredients Will You Need To Make Homemade Gravy Mix?

  • Milk Powder – Milk Powder acts as a great thickening agent and is quite useful when you want a thick consistency in your gravy. For this recipe, you will need one ⅓ cup of milk powder.
  • Flour – Flour also helps with thickening a gravy. Hence plain refined flour can be used to make a homemade gravy mix. For 12 servings of gravy mix, you will need about ¾ cups of refined flour.
  • Beef Bouillon Granules – Beef Bouillon is what adds the savory and umami flavor to the gravy, which is what makes it as delicious as it is! In case you don’t find granulated beef bouillon, you can use cubes. Just smash them with the back of a spoon before making the gravy mix. For this recipe, ¼ cup of granules will be enough.
  • Unsalted Butter – So generally, while making anything that requires thickening, a base of butter and flour are used to make a roux. For this same reason, you will need ½ cup of unsalted butter to make this gravy mix. Moreover, the butter will also add some shine to your gravy and make it look more appealing.
  • Salt – For seasoning this recipe, you will need around two teaspoons of salt. In case you end up using regular salted butter instead of unsalted butter, use half the quantity of salt.
  • Black Pepper – Black pepper will add a little kick of spice and flavor to your gravy and, eventually, make it taste divine.

Steps To Make Homemade Gravy Mix

1. Get All The Ingredients Together

The first step to making this homemade gravy mix is to get all your ingredients together. Once all your ingredients are together, in a large bowl, combine the milk powder, flour, beef bouillon granules, salt, and pepper, and give it a good mix.

2. Mix In The Butter

Once all the dry ingredients are mixed together, it is time to add the butter to this mix. For that, chop small pieces of hard butter and add them to the dry ingredients. Start mixing the butter in with your hand or a masher of some sort. Make sure you don’t apply so much pressure that the butter begins to melt. Once the butter is all mixed in, it should have a sandy texture.

3. Transfer To A Container And Store

Once the butter is mixed into the dry ingredients, that is about it! So then, all you have to do is transfer this mixture to an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator. Make sure you use this mixture within six weeks.

How To Make A Gravy Out Of This Homemade Gravy Mix?

Once the homemade gravy mix is ready, in comes the ever-important question, which is how can it be turned into actual gravy? Trust me; this is also one of the easiest steps ever! To make a gravy with this homemade gravy mix, all you need to do is combine four tablespoons of the gravy mix with a cup of water. Place it over medium heat and stir the mixture constantly until it thickens and forms a shiny gravy. That’s really about it!

What Can This Homemade Gravy Be Served With?

  • Mashed Potatoes – Mashed potatoes are great as they are, for sure. But, we all know what a wonderful combination of umami flavors is made when mashed potatoes are served alongside some gravy!
  • Steak – Steak and gravy are simply a great combination of meaty flavors together. Add a little bit of gravy to your favorite steak to make it less dry and even more flavorful.
  • Fries – If you know about Canadian Poutine, you know where I am getting at with this combination! Simply add a ladle of gravy and some cheese curds to your fries to make it delicious poutine.
  • Biscuits – Biscuits, eggs, and sausages make up a hearty breakfast meal. To make this breakfast meal even more delicious, you can add some umami beef gravy to it!
  • Poultry – As gravy is an important part of any thanksgiving meal, in no way would I ever forget mentioning poultry! Not just turkey, though; pair this gravy with some chicken, too, to get an exceptional flavor.

How Will Homemade Gravy Mix Look And Taste Like?

Homemade gravy mix, as you already saw, barely takes any time to make. But, whenever following a recipe online, especially for beginners, one may wonder how the recipe is supposed to turn out. This gravy mix will look like any other powder or store-bought gravy mix.

What will make it stand out is the fact that it has no added preservatives. So, even when you convert this gravy mix into an actual gravy, you will get a cleaner and more pleasant umami taste, very similar to freshly made gravy, as compared to any packaged gravy mix.
