- I also let my bacon crisp fully before adding them to the beans. It enables me to add a nice crunch to the beans.
- After browning the meat and sauteing the onions, I use a splash of beer to deglaze the pan. This adds depth to the hobo beans and lifts up the extra bits of meat stuck to the pan.Â

Recipe Variations For Different Diets
- Gluten-Free: Just replace pork and beans with plain cooked beans, gluten-free tomato sauce, and mustard with gluten-free mustard brands like French classic yellow mustard or Annie’s organic Dijon mustard. After that, I replaced plain vinegar with rice vinegar, and my gluten-free hobo beans were ready.
- Keto-Friendly: I ditch onions and use shallots instead to make a keto-friendly version. Then, I use green or black soybeans instead of kidney beans and butter beans. For the tomato ketchup, I use tomato paste with vinegar and erythritol instead of brown sugar.
Storing And Reheating This Recipe
Storing
- Refrigerator: Before refrigeration, I let my beans come to room temperature, then transfer them to a clean, airtight container to prevent them from drying out. Finally, I place the container in the refrigerator, where it is stored for up to 4-5 days.
- Freezer: First, I divide the hobo beans into a single serving portion, which makes the thawing of the beans easier. Then, I place these portions in a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible before sealing. Then, I place these bags in the freezer to preserve my hobo beans for up to three months.
Reheating
Note: Make sure to thaw the hobo beans in the refrigerator overnight before reheating them.
- Stovetop: I first place the beans in a saucepan and heat them on a medium flame. Then, I add a splash of water to prevent them from drying. I also keep stirring the beans occasionally to ensure they are heated thoroughly. I also cover the pot with a lid to prevent the steam from escaping. I heat it for at least 5-10 minutes until fully warmed.
- Microwave: This is the quickest method. I place the beans in a microwave-safe bowl and cover them with a lid. Then, I heat them on a medium power of 50-60% in 1-2 minute intervals to ensure even heating. I sometimes add a splash of water to prevent them from drying.
- Oven: This method requires you to preheat the oven to 350°F and place the hobo beans in an oven-safe dish covered with foil. You can also add a splash of water to smooth it out. Then, you have to heat it for 20-30 minutes, stirring halfway to make sure it is evenly heated.
What To Serve With This Recipe
When it comes to pairing my hobo beans with delicious sides, the options are endless. I love to have them with Cornbread because the balance between the sweetness of the cornbread and the savory beans is just perfect. Then, I serve them with Baked Potatoes and Coleslaw to complement the rich flavours of the hearty beans.
Grilled Chicken or Smoked Sausage adds protein to these smoked savory beans. Moreover, BBQ Ribs and Pulled Pork work wonders when served along with these hobo beans.
