This Grandma’s Chicken Noodle Soup recipe is as classic as possible, with some of the best flavors.

Writing this recipe brought back a lot of nostalgia. I remember when I was a little girl, whenever I had a cold or cough, my grandma would be ready with her piping hot bowl of delicious soup.

After growing up, I started making this soup for myself. Bringing you the original charm of a chicken noodle soup, I have stuck to basics and curated the most straightforward recipe ever.

I can guarantee that with every bite you take of this soup, you will surely remember your grandma and her immense love! So, dive right in.

Equipments Required

  • Measuring Cups and Spoons: The most basic equipment will help you get precise measurements so the flavor of your soup is on point and well-balanced.
  • Large Knife: The recipe involves some chopping, so I suggest using a large, sharp knife.
  • Chopping Board: This piece of equipment will make your chopping much easier.
  • Dutch Oven: I recommend using a Dutch oven to prepare this soup, as it works best. However, you can also use a deep, large pot if you don’t have one.
  • Strainer: Once your noodles are ready, a strainer will make it much easier to drain the liquid.
  • Bowl: A small bowl will be good enough to make the cornstarch slurry in.
  • Ladle: This will help with serving your soup once it is ready.

  • For a richer flavor, use bone-in chicken and let it simmer with the soup for a little longer.
  • Boil a new batch of noodles whenever you want to eat the soup, and only add the amount required for the portions you need.
  • Add more veggies and a bouquet garni filled with whole spices for a sharper flavor.
  • Storing this soup with the noodles might not be the best thing to do. The texture of the noodles will not stay as they are after storing the soup for a while.

Recipe Variations For Different Diets

  • Vegan and Vegetarian Diets: Switching the cooked chicken with vegan chicken can quickly turn it into a vegan and vegetarian-friendly soup. Similarly, this recipe can be made with vegetable stock instead of chicken stock. The rest of the ingredients and process remain the same.
  • Gluten-Free Diet: You can switch egg noodles with rice noodles for this recipe. Just ensure you add them towards the end, as they tend to be much more brittle than egg noodles.
  • Keto Diet: This soup does have its share of carbohydrates in the form of egg noodles, which means people on a keto diet cannot eat it. But, to accommodate a keto diet, you can substitute egg noodles with zucchini noodles.
  • Low-Sodium Diet: This soup may have a slightly higher sodium content for some people. The best way to reduce it is to add less salt to your stock and soup and use fresh herbs instead of poultry seasoning to save on some of the extra salt.

Storing And Reheating This Recipe

Storing The Soup:

  • On The Counter: If you want to enjoy this soup within a few hours of preparing it, you can leave it in the same pot that you prepared it in and keep it on the counter without any worry for up to two hours.
  • In The Refrigerator: It is best to transfer this soup to the refrigerator after two hours. For that, transfer the soup, without the noodles, to an airtight container and place it in the fridge for up to three days.
  • In The Freezer: If you want to store the soup for much longer, like a couple of weeks or even a month, it is best to freeze it. For that, I recommend transferring the soup to an airtight container or even a ziplock bag and placing it safely in the freezer for up to a month. Also, thaw the soup thoroughly before reheating.

Reheating The Soup:

  • On A Stove Top: The easiest and best way to reheat this soup is in a large pot on a stovetop. Let the soup heat up until it begins to simmer; do not let it boil. Ensure your flame is set to low or medium to prevent the soup from boiling.
  • In A Microwave: If you don’t have a stovetop, you can also reheat this soup in a microwave. Just transfer the soup to a microwave-safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds at the highest heat setting until piping hot.

What To Serve With This Recipe

This soup has the correct carbohydrate-to-protein ratio, making it a nutritious meal. However, if your soup seems incomplete, you can pair it with an array of options, the most obvious being a piece of Garlic Bread

You can also be fancy and serve Cheese and Crackers with this dish or a wholesome Vegetable Cheesecake.
