Equipments Required
- Frying Pan – You will need a frying pan to toast the walnuts lightly. A non-stick frying pan works best for this purpose.
- Small Mixing Bowl – A small mixing bowl will help you prepare the dressing.
- Large Mixing Bowl – To prepare the salad, use a large bowl. It will help you combine all the ingredients easily.
- Spoon – Using a tablespoon to mix and spread the dressing on the salad will be a good idea.
Gordon Ramsay Prawn Salad Ingredients & Substitutions
Note: The recipe makes enough for four servings. You can easily make more or less salad by adjusting the quantity of ingredients.
For The Salad
- 1 Small Romaine Lettuce, Shredded – I recommend buying fresh lettuce. To make it crunchier, place it in cold water before use. If you don’t find romaine, you can use iceberg or any other favorite lettuce of your choice.
- One Celery, Chopped – If you don’t find it, add any other vegetable you choose, like green onions, carrots, cucumbers, or radishes.
- 1 Apple (cored, cut into 1cm pieces) – You must use freshly cut apples as they get oxidized easily or place the cut bits in a bowl of water to prevent them from oxidizing.
- 100 g Grapes (washed, halved) – Red grapes work the best for this recipe.
- 200 g King Prawns (peeled, deveined) – To make this salad, you will need peeled and cooked King prawns. I recommend sourcing fresh and plum prawns for the best flavor. You will have to boil them to cook them before using them. However, if you don’t find fresh king prawns, you can use pre-cooked frozen prawns, shrimp, chicken, or crab meat in their place.
- 1 Cup Walnuts – You can also use almonds, pecans, or hazelnuts in its place.
For The Dressing
- 100 grams Greek Yogurt – Chef Ramsay uses yogurt to prepare a smooth dressing, and we recommend you do the same. If you don’t have Greek yogurt, you can use ranch or mayonnaise in its place. However, it should be noted that mayonnaise will make the salad heavier, whereas ranch will keep it light.
- 1 ½ Teaspoon Dijon Mustard – You can also use yellow mustard instead of Dijon mustard.
- 1 Teaspoon Cider Vinegar – If you don’t find cider vinegar, you can easily substitute white vinegar.
- ½ Lemon Juice – Lemon juice will add a slight tanginess to the sauce.
- 1 Teaspoon Salt – You can start by adding a pinch of salt and increase it to taste.
- 1 Teaspoon Black Pepper – You will need black pepper to add some heart to the salad.

Expert Tips That I Recommend
- I prefer storing this salad in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving as it helps the flavors meld together nicely.
- To thaw frozen prawns, I find defrosting them in the refrigerator overnight best. However, you can also run them under cold water for 10-15 minutes. Just make sure to drain them well to prevent the dressing from watering down.
- If you enjoy smoky flavors, try making this salad with grilled shrimp or adding a dash of smoked paprika.

Recipe Variations For Different Diets
- Vegetarian – You can easily make this salad vegetarian-friendly by swapping prawns for more veggies like potato or sweet potato.
- Vegan – If you follow a vegan diet, I suggest you swap prawns for veggies and yogurt for vegan mayonnaise.
- Dairy-Free – If you wish to make this dairy-free, omit Greek yogurt.
How To Store This Prawn Salad
This salad should be consumed fresh, as storing it in the refrigerator or freezer will spoil its texture and flavor.
If you still wish to store it, I recommend you place all the components, that is, the prawns, dressings, veggies, and fruits, separately in airtight containers in the refrigerator.
Toss the desired quantity only when you are ready to serve it.
What To Serve With This Recipe
One of the reasons my family and I absolutely adore this salad is that it goes well with many food items. One of my simplest and favorite pairings with prawn salad is serving it with sourdough bread, brioche buns, or Avocado Toast.
Apart from that, I also like to eat it with a Creamy Mushroom Soup or Tomato Soup. However, I paired this salad with Couscous and Baked Potatoes the other day. I have to admit, these two pairings have become my absolute favorite.
To enjoy this salad as a full-course meal, I often toss in Vermicelli or Glass Noodles. I also like to enjoy it as a wrap. So, I place it between tortillas or toss the salad without lettuce and place it over lettuce leaves to make a healthy wrap.
