Steps To Make Ghostbuster Cookies

1. Prepare The Cookie Dough

Line a baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone mat. Put butter and sugar in a standing mixer or use an electric hand mixer to process the ingredients until creamy. Add egg yolks, salt, and vanilla; process for 30 seconds until combined. Now add 1 cup flour and process until smooth. Add the remaining cup of flour to the processor.

Once everything is combined well, take out the dough and press it on a surface to make a flat square. Now wrap the dough in plastic wrap and transfer it to the refrigerator until chilled.

2. Cut Out Small Cookies

Once the dough is chilled, place a nonstick baking mat on the work surface. Place half of the chilled dough on a baking mat and top it with a sheet of plastic wrap. Roll out dough to 1/8-inch-thickness between the baking mat and plastic wrap. Transfer the rolled dough into the fridge once again to chill until firm, for about 30 minutes.

Repeat the process with the remaining dough. Using a 2-inch round fluted cookie cutter, cut out dough and transfer it to prepared baking sheets. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees and bake the cookies until they turn pale golden, for about 12 to 15 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

3. Prepare The Royal Icing 

In a bowl, whisk egg whites until light and foamy, and then gradually add the powdered sugar. Now add in the water one teaspoon at a time. You will do this until you can make the figure of eight with the icing. You can make this figure on top of the icing you have made. You will know that you have reached the correct royal icing consistency once the figure of eight forms disappears in a few minutes.

Make sure that the icing is stiff enough to pipe but not too runny. Now divide the royal icing into three bowls. Color one bowl of royal icing with black color and the second one with red. Once you have three colors of royal icing, that is, original white, red royal icing, and black, pour them into piping bags. Now here, you can use creativity depending on how you want to style your cookies.

4. Decorate The Cookies

You can make a red ring on the cookies using the red royal icing and outlining it with black royal icing. In between, you draw a peeping ghostbuster with white royal icing. Decorate all the cookies the same way, and voila you are ready to set your Halloween table!

Note: The cookie dough is good enough to give you about 100 cookies. You can use half the quantity of ingredients to make a smaller batch. Additionally, you can also multiply the quantities of royal icing ingredients depending on your requirement.

For Cookies

  • 2 cups  All-Purpose Flour (plus more for work surface)
  • 2/3 cups Sugar
  • 3/4 cup Unsalted Butter (plus more for baking sheets)
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 2 Large Egg Yolks
  • A Pinch of Salt

Royal Icing

  • 2 Egg Whites
  • 3 cups Sugar (powdered, sifted)
  • 1 teaspoon Water
  • 1 Black and red food color (small bottle)


For Cookies:

  • Line the baking tray with parchment paper or a silicone mat and set aside.
  • Place sugar and butter in the bowl of a standing mixer or use an electric mixer and process the ingredients until creamy.
  • Add salt, egg yolks, and vanilla and process for 30 seconds until combined. Then add 1 cup flour and process until smooth and add the remaining cup of flour to the processor.
  • Take the dough out onto the workign surface and form into a flat square.
  • Now wrap it with a plastic wrap and transfer to the refrigerator for chilling.
  • Place a nonstick baking mat on the work surface. Place half of the chilled dough on the baking mat and cover it with a sheet of plastic wrap.
  • Now roll out the dough between plastic wrap and baking mat to a thickness of 1/8-inch.
  • Transfer to the fridge for 30 minutes to chill. Repeat the process with the remaining dough.
  • Cut out dough and transfer to prepared baking sheets using a 2-inch round fluted cookie cutter. Preheat the oven to 325 degrees.
  • Bake the cookies for about 12 to 15 minutes until they are pale golden. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.

For Royal Icing:

  • In a large bowl using a handheld mixer (or a stand mixer), whisk the egg whites until white and foamy. Then add the powdered sugar gradually until the mixture forms stiff peaks. Now add in one teaspoon of water at a time until you can make a figure of eight with the icing that disappears in eight seconds on top of the icing itself.
  • Divide the royal icing into two bowls. Leave one bowl as it is and add a few drops of black food coloring to the other bowl.
  • Transfer both shades of royal icing into different piping bags and decorate the cookies to make them resemble Jack Skellington.
  • Make sure to let the royal icing dry completely before serving.
  • Store the cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week.
