The hungry student is a passive student. Asleep, absent, miserable, and simply carried away by the wind. But every country usually has its own gastronomic customs and traditions. There are no boundaries for students, though. For example, an Italian or French student, just like an American student, can happily eat chips, eat it with French fries and drink beer. But in general, just as there are differences in the mentalities of the countries, there are also certain differences in the nutrition of students from one country or another.
Moreover, there is a noticeable difference in the price of lunch. In some countries, you have to spend a lot of money, while in others, some even manage to save and get assignment writing help with this money. Germany takes a serious and thorough approach to almost everything. Accuracy, quality and affordability are the main features of student lunches and dinners. Talking about any German university, you can long and enthusiastically cluck your tongues when describing the lecture halls, computer labs with the latest technology, or the rich library. However, as they say, a hungry student is an absentee student. So no matter where you go, you’ll follow the scent of the dining hall. Here it is called Mensa – meaning “table.” Here several main dishes are prepared every day – Tagesgericht – which is usually meat, fish, a side dish and obligatory – a vegetarian supplement for those who adhere to such lifestyle.
The dining room itself is a large buffet, with separate sections of pasta buffet, pizza, two dozen different salads, appetizers: cheese, olives, chicken, roasted vegetables, potato fritters, and so on. The menu for each day is posted on the university website and every student can see it in their personal office. The local Studentenwerk is responsible for the menu, its quality, and the sanitary conditions of the cafeteria.
In addition to the main dishes, everyone can take a fruit or dessert, several kinds of fresh bread, and drinks. However, Menza is open only a few hours – at lunchtime, and by the way, the canteen functions even during periods when there are no lectures at the university. On holidays there is also a bonus menu. If you get hungry and Mensa is closed, you’re welcome to visit the cafeteria, which has more snacks and snacks and drinks. And on holidays, mulled wine and beer are on sale. The quality of these dishes does not differ in any way from the dining room standards.
Now let’s talk about price. It often happens that the typical student cannot afford lunch in the university canteen. In Germany, this is no problem, because there is a student card! By presenting it at the Mensa or cafeteria cash register, the student gets a discount and buys his or her lunch at a special, reduced price. You can also ask for a free packed lunch to take away.
So a regular lunch will cost about 2-3 euros and coffee with pastries or sweets from 50 cents. The interesting thing is that if you are an inflexible fan of homemade food, and still try to eat only home-cooked food, in Menzies no one will stop you from eating your own lunch. What’s more, there are microwaves, disposable dishes, and an electric kettle for such occasions.
The most common type of lunch, despite the large range of dishes, is potato salad with ham, pancakes of pastry with meat stuffing, roasted vegetables, cheese, coffee and salad. The cost of such a lunch is 3 EUR. Compared with other countries, it is not very expensive – in fact, German students can afford little more than lunches, for example, such nice little things as essay writing help.
Universities in Poland also have adapted canteens, cafeterias and stores, but students prefer to eat home-cooked meals, which they bring with them from home or cook in a common kitchen. The reason for this is that there are many students from CIS countries studying in Poland, who perceive homemade food as a tradition, and often do not have enough money to eat in special canteens for a whole month on a scholarship.
A gastronomic hit is the Polish “zhurek” soup made with eggs and finely chopped sausage, the deruny with meat and stuffed cabbage rolls. The social and community life of American students is the envy of many students around the world. In addition to clubs and committees, fraternities, open colloquiums, workshops, and lectures that are free to attend, nutrition is also technical. As a junior in college, you move into a dormitory where you have everything you need to cook yourself a simple meal. However, when parents send their child to college, they pay for six months’ worth of meals.
This includes breakfast, lunch, dinner, and sometimes even an afternoon snack. A special individual card with an identification code is used to pay for food, and the money is deducted from this card. Meals in the dining halls are very different. Bulgarian students live in dormitories, in rooms for 2-3 people, which is not designed for its own kitchen. In most cases, students live in blocks – for 2-3 rooms with one shower room, restroom and kitchen, where there is an electric stove, microwave oven and other stuff.
The refrigerator is usually kept in the room. The kitchen is where students cook noodles and eggs, as well as preparing cabbage soup, and green borscht with sorrel. Most of the time, they eat whatever they can make in a couple of minutes. There are parcels from their parents – mostly they send pickles, jams and jams, as well as luteniza – grated tomatoes with pepper, salt and sugar. A popular breakfast and lunch item is the lutenitz and goat cheese sandwich.
There are dining halls on university campuses where a full lunch can be purchased. Lunch includes the main course – most often soup or roast, a side dish or salad, a drink, and dessert.
