Domino’s Brooklyn Style vs Hand Tossed Pizza | Which One is Better

This is the new era of pizza. Gone are the days when people used to eat fat dough for the pizza base. This is the age of thin crispy pizzas that you can enjoy without the continuous nibbling. Domino’s, our friendly neighborhood pizza giant, is many-a-times the solution to our pizza woes. But with its range of Brooklyn-style pizzas and hand-tossed pizzas, a new question arises, “Which of the two is better?”

Brooklyn Style Pizza vs Hand Tossed Pizza

Let me just say that everyone is entitled to their own opinion but here I am only giving mine. The Brooklyn-style pizza is hand-stretched and differs from its counterpart, hand-tossed pizza. The pieces of the former are thinner and crispier, which is the ultimate preference for me as I like the foldable New York pizza. But if you are a fan of a thick and chewy crust pizza that has the cheese quantity of your dreams, then the hand-tossed pizza is the one for you.

Let me give you a reference table that’ll help you understand the difference better.

Criteria Domino’s Brooklyn Style Pizza Domino’s Hand Tossed Pizza
Preparation The Brooklyn-style pizza is kneaded and hand-stretched. The hand-tossed pizza, as the name suggests, is tossed in the air with hands.
Healthy The pizza has a thinner crust and less cheese. So, it is healthier.  The pizza has more cheese and a thicker crust, so it is less healthy than the former.
Size When it comes to size, you get 6 slices in a large Brooklyn-style pizza.  The hand-tossed pizza is slightly larger in size and has about 8 slices.
Toppings The Brooklyn size pizza has more pepperoni and less cheese on it. The hand-tossed pizza leans on the more cheese side.
Taste The Brooklyn-style pizza has a crispy crust and a pepperoni taste. The hand-tossed pizza has a more prominent cheese taste and is also seasoned with garlic.

This table will help you understand the major differences between the two. But if you want extensive and detailed information about the pizzas and their differences, then you must keep reading.

What Is A Brooklyn Style Pizza?

The Brooklyn-style pizza is the New York-type pizza version that Domino’s makes in an effort to deliver the famously thin and foldable New York pizzas all over the U.S.A. The Domino’s Brooklyn-style pizza comes identically close to the real deal. Also, the crust is sturdy and you get a great amount of pepperoni on top, which for meat lovers is a reason to rejoice.

The slices of the Brooklyn-style pizza are wider than the usual pizzas, just like its inspiration, the New York-style pizza. The pizza is made from a smaller dough than the usual pizzas. The dough is then kneaded and stretched with hands that make the thin middle crust and thick outer edge possible. It also goes easy on the cheese, which is another contributing factor to the sturdiness of the crust. This pizza is great for someone who loves thin crust pizza and a meat-load of toppings.

What Is A Hand Tossed Pizza?

The hand-tossed pizza is not just one pizza but a category of pizzas that are tossed in the air before they are baked. Every pizza that has been tossed in the air using the chef’s hand can be called a hand-tossed pizza. Well, if you are wondering as to why people like hand-tossed pizzas so much? Let me tell you this is because they are a range of crunchy and delicious pizzas.

Talking about the hand-tossed pizza at Domino’s, it has a thinner crust than many pizzas on their menu. The pizza dough is needed, rolled, and then as the procedure demands, tossed in the air. Yes, exactly like they show in movies. This technique gives you a thin crust that many people love. If we talk about the toppings, Domino’s hand-tossed pizza is a firm believer that the more, the merrier, in the case of cheese. The crust is thick and chewy and, of course, cheesy. If you are a melted cheese lover, then your order should definitely have Domino’s hand-tossed pizza.

The Main Differences Between Domino’s Brooklyn Style vs Hand Tossed Pizza

Domino's Brooklyn Style vs Hand-Tossed Pizza

Now that you know what both Brooklyn-style and hand-tossed pizzas are, we can discuss their differences in detail. But before that, let me mention some things that these two rivals have in common.

Both these pizzas are handmade, making both of them worthy of love and appreciation. Both these pizzas are not baked in a deep dish but in shallow pans made of aluminum. The heat conductivity of aluminum allows the pizza to have that beautiful crispy crust we are so direly looking for. Also, both these pizzas are absolutely delicious, and I must say, and great for satisfying your hunger pangs. So, if you are someone who isn’t very particular about what kind of crust they like, then you can just order both and enjoy.

For those of you who know what kind of crust and topping they like, read on. The battle is about to begin.

1. How Are They Prepared?

As I mentioned above, both these pizzas are handmade in Domino’s. But it goes without saying that the preparation method differs. Let’s start with Domino’s Brooklyn-style pizza. This pizza uses a smaller dough. Why? Because it needs to be stretched after it has been rolled. The stretching increases the surface area of the pizza giving you the classic New York-style crust and wider slices we aim to achieve. Then, the crust is topped with as many pepperoni slices as it can accommodate. The crust is baked with a touch of cornmeal for that scruffy and crispy base.

Now, in contrast, the Dominos’ hand-tossed pizza is not stretched. The dough for the pizza is larger in size. It is rolled out and then tossed in the air. This helps it give a thinner crust than usual pizzas but not as thin as the Brooklyn-style pizza. The toppings include your favorite veggies and meat but with an extra dose of cheese. The pizza is seasoned with garlic oil adding fuel to our garlic bread with cheese obsession.

2. Texture Of Both Domino’s Brooklyn Style vs Hand Tossed Pizza

The answer to this one is a simple one-liner in both cases. The texture of the Domino’s Brooklyn-style pizza is thin, crispy, yet still stretchable. The texture of the Domino’s hand-tossed pizza is chewy, soft, and sometimes floppy.

It is because of this floppiness that you cannot fold the hand-tossed pizza and eat it. The Brooklyn-style pizza gives you that New York satisfaction of pizza folding.

3. Which Pizza Tastes BetterDomino’s Brooklyn Style vs Hand Tossed Pizza?

Now, this is a matter of preference. Everybody has taste buds evolved in different ways and I respect all choices (except pineapple on pizza). So, I’ll let you know the taste of both and leave it to you to decide which one’s better.

The Domino’s Brooklyn-style serves up the taste of the tomato sauce and mostly pepperoni. The sauce gives the pizza a slightly warm taste. That doesn’t mean there is no cheese in the pizza. There is but not too much. There is only as much as necessary.

The Domino’s hand-tossed pizza, on the other hand, also has the sauce that balances the flavor but has the overpowering taste of cheese. Not that I am complaining. But that’s not what sells it. The pizza is seasoned with garlic oil giving it the aroma and taste of garlic. We all know that garlic, cheese, and bread are three things that are absolutely made for each other.

I don’t want to get ahead of myself, but I honestly think that the garlic oil makes the hand-tossed pizza tastier, even if it’s by a tad bit. But then again, it all comes to preference.

4. Which Is More Healthier – Domino’s Brooklyn Style vs Hand Tossed Pizza?

This is kind of a given and I’d like to answer that straightforwardly. Domino’s Brooklyn-style pizza is the healthier option among the two. Even though we are talking about fast food and the Brooklyn style pizza is not as healthy as a bland, boring broccoli floret. Still, it is healthier when compared to the hand-tossed pizza.

For one, it has a thinner crust which means less intake of gluten, sodium, and starch. But it also has a lesser amount of cheese which amounts to less intake of fat, cholesterol, carbs, and whatnot. So, with the help of nutritional terms, I am trying to prove my point here.

5. When To Order Domino’s Hand Tossed Pizza Vs When To Order Domino’s Brooklyn Style Pizza?

This is another question that is based on preference and has no wrong answers. See, if you are a fan of the New York-style pizza and have a party of people who feel the same, then that’s the time you should order a thin and crispy Brooklyn-style pizza. It will be your pizza rewind and you’ll enjoy it.

But if you want a chewy pizza with lots of cheese while watching your favorite movies with your friends, then the hand-tossed pizza is the ultimate choice. You can just enjoy the gooey cheese that goes perfectly well with the soft crust.

What about me? I personally like to sit back and relax with a Brooklyn-style pizza paired with a can of diet soda and watch comedy and food shows. Yup, that’s my jam.

In What Sizes Domino’s Brooklyn Style And Hand Tossed Pizza Are Available?

pizzas in boxes

Well, at this point, I just feel like a Domino’s rep, but I’ll still answer this question for my lovely readers. Both these pizzas have one common size, which is large. This size is the largest for the hand-tossed pizza yet the smallest for the Brooklyn style.

But as the Brooklyn-style pizza stays authentic to its New York roots, hence it only has 6 wide slices and is a bit smaller. The hand-tossed, on the other hand, gives you the full package of 8 slices in all their glory. The hand-tossed pizza comes in three sizes; small (10”), medium (12”), and large (14”). The Brooklyn-style pizza comes in two sizes; large (14”) and extra-large (16”).

How Are Domino’s Brooklyn Style And Hand Tossed Different From Thin Crust?

Hand-Tossed vs Brooklyn Style Pizza

Actually, if you are talking about the thinnest crust, then the Brooklyn pizza differs from it in the matter of crispiness. See, even though the Brooklyn-style pizza is crispy, it is still soft and stretchy in the middle and in a few places. But the thin crust is just crispy in all of the places.

The hand-tossed pizza has already strayed far away from the crispy category, so the main difference would be that the hand-tossed pizza is soft and chewy while the thin crust is crispy and crunchy. Also, the thickness of the crust is different in all three but I think you kind of got that already.

Prices of Domino’s Brooklyn Style and Hand Tossed Pizza in Domino’s

The different sizes of both pizzas have different prices, with the large sizes of the two having the same price. Here is the list of prices of the two for the respective sizes

Domino’s Hand Tossed Pizza

Small $6.99
Medium $8.99
Large $10.99

Domino’s Brooklyn Style Pizza

Large $10.99
Extra Large $12.99

The rate of both large pizzas is the same that goes to show that there is not a large difference between prices. But the Brooklyn style has only 6 slices while the hand-tossed has 8.

Can You Cook Brooklyn Style Or Hand Tossed Pizza At Home?

The answer is yes. You can make both of these delicious pizzas at home. Even though they might not have Domino’s-like crispy or chewy crust, they have the warmth of homemade food.

Conclusion

So, if you ask me, Domino’s Brooklyn-style pizza has won this contest because it is slightly healthier, crispier, and meatier than the hand-tossed one. But this is my opinion. If you are on the soft, chewy, and cheesy side, then your winner would be the hand-tossed cheese pizza from Domino’s. Tell me in the comments what side you are on. Also, we still get to eat pizza so we are all winners.
