What Ingredients Will You Need To Make A Christmas Tree Cake? 

For The Cake : 

  • All-Purpose Flour – The first ingredient needed for this recipe, which forms the whole base of the cake, is all-purpose flour. To get a yield of 8 servings from this cake, you will need one ⅔ cup of all-purpose flour. You can also use cake flour if you would like. 
  • Sugar – A single cup of white caster sugar will be needed for this recipe. Caster sugar does tend to work better than granulated sugar as it dissolves in the butter more easily. 
  • Baking Powder – One of the recipe’s leavening agents is a baking powder; you will need a single teaspoon of the same. 
  • Baking Soda – Baking soda is the second leavening agent in this recipe, which also gives this cake an utterly soft texture. Just ¼ teaspoon will be needed for this recipe. 
  • Butter – This recipe needs ¾ cups of unsalted butter at room temperature. Make sure that the butter is unsalted and soft.
  • Eggs – We won’t use whole eggs but egg whites instead for this recipe. So, this recipe needs egg whites from three large eggs. 
  • Greek Yogurt – Greek yogurt is the acidic agent with which the baking soda will react and give the cake a soft texture. ½ cup will be needed for this recipe. 
  • Milk – Milk is the wet ingredient that brings the batter together, and for this recipe, you will need ½ cup of whole milk. You can also go with milk that has a lower fat content but is not completely skimmed. 
  • Peppermint Extract – This recipe needs ½ teaspoon of peppermint extract for that perfect holiday flavor. You can use vanilla extract, too, if you don’t have any of this.
  • Salt – Lastly, you will need ¼ teaspoon of salt to enhance all the flavors in this recipe. 

For The Frosting : 

  • Confectioners Sugar – For this recipe, we will make a simple American buttercream as the cake frosting, and you will need roughly 1.5 lbs of the same.

Steps To Make Christmas Tree Cake

1. Pre Preparations

Pre preparations are one of the most vital steps of baking. So, we will take care of them before we start preparing the cake. Firstly, you will need to preheat your oven to 340 degrees Fahrenheit. 

Meanwhile, you can grease the cake pans with some butter and dust them with flour, just enough to cover all the sides of the pans. Then, in a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt and set aside. 

Next, crack the eggs in a large bowl and separate the yolks from the whites. Here, do ensure that there isn’t any yolk in the whites. Also, don’t throw the yolks away! Store them in a container wrapped tightly in plastic in the refrigerator. They can whip up homemade mayonnaise or even a beautiful custard! 

2. Bake The Cake

After all your pre-preparation is done, you can begin making the cake batter and baking it. Start by adding the room-temperature unsalted butter to a stand mixer bowl and the caster sugar. 

With a paddle attachment, let the butter and sugar whip together until the butter is extremely light and fluffy and all the sugar is dissolved. Mix the egg whites, greek yogurt, milk, and peppermint extract in a separate bowl. 

Now, begin adding the wet and dry ingredients into the creamed butter and sugar mixture, bit by bit, alternating each time. Only whip the mixture a little. Just mix until everything is combined to form a smooth batter. 

Once your batter is ready, transfer it to the greased and floured cake pans. Here, you can use a weighing scale to measure precise amounts in all three pans if you would like. But you can also eyeball the measurements. 

Place the pans on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 35 minutes. After 35 minutes, insert a small knife or skewer in the center to check if it comes clean. If it does, your cakes are ready or baked for another 5 minutes. 

Place the pans on a cooling rack for roughly 10 minutes, then take the cakes out of the pans and place them back on the cooling rack. This will ensure that the cakes cool down evenly before we begin frosting them. 

3. Make The Buttercream

While your cakes are baking in the oven, you can make your buttercream frosting, which is also a very easy process. Add the room-temperature butter to the stand mixer bowl and let it cream until it is light and fluffy. 

Then, add the confectioners’ sugar to the butter, bit by bit. Here, keep scraping the sides as you do so with a silicone spatula. Then, add the vanilla extract and a tablespoon of cream to get a creamier and lighter frosting. 

Once everything is combined, remove ⅓ of the frosting and keep it in a separate bowl. Add a few drops of green food coloring to the ⅓ portion and mix. Keep it aside. Once the cakes have cooled down, you can begin decorating them! 

4. Assemble The Cake

Lastly, once both major cake elements are ready, you can start assembling the cake. Firstly, take a small spoon of the frosting and spread it in the center of the serving plate. On that, place the bottommost layer of the cake. 

The little frosting ensures that the cake does not move while you layer and decorate it. Top the first layer of cake with a decent amount of white frosting. You can also use a piping bag and pipe the frosting onto it if you like. 

Or you can also eyeball the amount of frosting you want for each layer. Repeat this process with the middle layer and, finally, top it with the topmost layer. Now, let the cake chill in the refrigerator for five-ten minutes. 

After that, take the cake out, begin frosting the sides, and top it with white frosting. The first layer of frosting will be a crumb coat to collect the cake’s crumbs. Then, place the cake back into the refrigerator and let it chill for another ten minutes. 

For the last step, take the cake out of the refrigerator and cover it with a second layer of frosting. If there are cracks or empty spaces, don’t worry; we will cover them up with our main attraction, the Christmas trees! 

Now, for the Christmas trees, start by carefully slicing the sides of the ice cream cones so they can stick to the sides of the cake. Once you have a few, you can cut some of them in half to get an array of shapes and sizes. 

Then, decorate the cake with the cones all over and start piping out green buttercream frosting on them. It would help if you fit a piping bag with a star nozzle and gently pipe dollops over the cone. 

Once you are done, you can stick some Red MnMs to the cake and dust it with some icing sugar to give it a snowy look. Voila, your Christmas tree cake is ready!

For The Cake

  • Preheat the oven to 340 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease cake pans with butter and dusts them with flour, just enough to cover all the sides.
  • Crack the eggs into a large bowl and separate the yolks from the whites. Add milk, greek yogurt, and peppermint extract to the yolks and mix it all.
  • Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a separate bowl and keep it aside.
  • In a stand mixer bowl, add the room-temperature butter and the caster sugar and whip them together until they are light and fluffy.
  • Add the dry and wet ingredients alternately, bit by bit, while scraping the bowl.
  • Mix until just combined, then transfer the batter into the greased and floured cake pans.
  • Place the cake pans onto a baking tray and bake for 35 minutes, after which, if you insert a skewer, it should come out clean.
  • Once done, place the pans on a cooling rack for 10 minutes. Then, remove the cakes from the pan and let them cool completely on the cooling rack.

For The Frosting

  • In a stand mixer bowl, add the unsalted butter at room temperature and whip till it is light and fluffy.
  • Add the confectioner’s sugar to it, bit by bit, while mixing continuously.
  • Lastly, add some cream and vanilla extract, take ⅓ of the frosting into a separate bowl, and add a few drops of green food coloring.

Assembly

  • Place the first cake layer on a serving plate, secured with a dollop of frosting at the base.
  • Add white frosting onto the layer and spread evenly with a palette knife or offset spatula.
  • Repeat this process with the second layer and after the cake is topped with the third and final layer, place it in the refrigerator for 10 minutes.
  • Then, cover the cake with some of the white frosting, just enough to collect all the crumbs and for them to stick to the cake. Cool for 10 minutes.
  • After that, take the cake out of the refrigerator and cover it all over the sides and the top with white frosting until everything is covered.
  • Use a serrated knife to cut the sides of some of the ice cream cones and stick them to the sides of the cake. Also, cut some in half and place them on the cake.
  • Add the green buttercream to a piping bag with a star nozzle.
  • Pipe dollops of buttercream onto the ice cream cones, working your way from the bottom to the top.
  • Then, decorate with red MnMs and dust the cake with icing sugar. Slice and serve!
